MS Access 2003 & 2007 Runtime Installation Details

This section will provide you with more detailed information about Microsoft Access® Runtime installation for 2003 and 2007.  You should review this section if you would like more information on the Runtime installation, limitations, system requirements, or if you already have Microsoft Access® 97, or earlier version installed on your computer.

Using the Runtime

Once the Runtime has been installed, you do not need to do anything further in terms of the installation.  A successful installation of Microsoft Access® Runtime will not create any menu icons in your Start/Menu program menu.  Since this is a Runtime environment, you will not be able to run MS Access as a stand-alone program.  The Runtime is simply used to run a qualified Microsoft Access® application, such as Service Estimator Pro.

The Runtime installation creates registry entries in your computer's Windows environment which tells your computer how to run the MS Access application files which have the extension of "MDE, MDA or MDB".  This is called "program association".  If you have not installed the Runtime prior to installing Service Estimator Pro and do not have the full version of Microsoft Access® installed on your computer, then you will not be able to run the Service Estimator Pro program.  Your computer will return an error message informing you that it does not know how to run the program file "SEP.mdb".

Using MS Access Runtime 2003 concurrent with MS Access 97

If you would like to install the Microsoft Access® Runtime 2003 on a computer which already has an older, version of Microsoft Access® installed (such as Microsoft Access® 97), you will need to install the Microsoft Access® Runtime 2003 and then re-point the Service Estimator Pro application to override the older version.  If you do not make the following changes, your computer will try to run the Service Estimator Pro application using the older Microsoft Access version and fail since Service Estimator Pro will not run on a Microsoft Access® release prior to version 2003.

The following steps are required to correctly configure this re-pointing:

  1. Using your computer mouse, click on the system "Start" button at the bottom of your windows desktop screen, then click on "Programs".

  2. Inside the Programs list, look for "Service Estimator Pro", then click on that line

  3. Highlight "Service Estimator Pro" and then right click that line with your mouse to show a list where you should see "Properties"

  4. Click on the "Properties" line 5. Now you will see a box with General and Shortcut tabs on the top of the box. Click on the Shortcut tab and you will see a field called "Target"

  5. Replace the contents of current target with the following command line using your computer's cut and paste features:

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ART\Office11\MSACCESS.EXE" /excl /runtime "C:\Program Files\Service Estimator\SEP.mdb"

  6. Save the new command line by clicking on the "Ok" button in the properties box for the Service Estimator Pro application.
